A Romantic WPA Rock Garden Engagement Session

Josh and Ruben are getting married in Arizona but wanted to celebrate their engagement here in sunny California. We chose the WPA Rock Garden in Sacramento for its lush greenery and peaceful vibe. It was their first time ever being photographed together, and honestly, they did amazing once they settled in. The whole session felt like quiet sweet romance mixed with so much joy.

When you book an engagement session with me, I always remind couples that this time together is really about connection. So, if you’re planning your own engagement session soon, here are some tips to make it feel fun and easy.

Tips for Your WPA Rock Garden Engagement Session

Think of It as a Date… with a Third Wheel!

First, don’t stress about posing perfectly. Instead, think of your engagement session as a mini date night. It’s just the two of you, being yourselves, with me tagging along to capture the magic. Laugh together. Walk hand-in-hand. Whisper something silly. When you shift from “photo shoot” to “intentional time together,” nerves start to melt away.

Wear Something That Feels Like You

Confidence starts with comfort. So, pick outfits that feel like you and make you feel amazing. If you’re tugging at your clothes the whole time, it shows in the photos. I always suggest bringing a backup outfit too. Try one dressier option and one casual look so we can mix things up.

And remember, coordinate your colors and textures instead of matching exactly. This way, you’ll look cohesive but not too matchy-matchy.

Practice Makes Playful

Feeling extra nervous? Try practicing at home. Grab your phone, set it up, and snap a few playful shots. Dance in your kitchen. Kiss on the couch. Go for a walk around the block. The more you practice just being present together, the more natural it will feel when the camera comes out.

Trust Your Photographer (That’s Me!)

You don’t need to know what to do because that’s my job. I’ll guide you through natural prompts and gentle direction to pull out real connection instead of stiff smiles. Think less about looking perfect and more about enjoying each other’s company.

Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera

This is the big one. The more you focus on each other, the better the photos. Engagement sessions are really about your love story, not perfect poses. When in doubt, snuggle close and forget I’m there. That’s where the sweetest moments show up.
