Getting in front of the camera for your engagement session can feel a little intimidating, especially when you’re not sure what to do with your hands or how to stand. If you’re thinking, “We’re not models, we’re so awkward in front of the camera,” you’re not alone. Nearly every couple I work with says the same thing at first. But here’s the thing: engagement session posing doesn’t need to feel stiff or forced. In fact, my goal is to help you feel completely relaxed and connected with each other so the photos feel like you.
Whether we’re shooting outdoors or in a cozy studio like Create and Bloom Studios (like I did for N & M’s session), the approach stays the same: joyful, candid, and true to your vibe.

Engagement Session Posing 101
Starting with Movement, Not Static Poses
Rather than telling you to freeze in one position, I like to start with movement-based prompts. It’s all about creating space for you to be yourselves.
You might hear me say things like:
“Walk toward me like you’re leaving your wedding ceremony.”
“Pull each other in like it’s been a week since you’ve seen each other.”
“Stroll and bump hips like awkward teenagers.”
These kinds of directions not only loosen things up, but also spark real moments that feel natural and full of emotion. When you’re focused on each other and having fun, you forget the camera is even there.
I Give You Prompts For Your Engagement Session Posing
I’m not going to tell you exactly where to place your hand or how to tilt your head. Instead, I offer fun and playful prompts that draw out your real connection.
Things like:
“Tell them the story of your first kiss.”
“Whisper your favorite thing about them, but do it in a pirate voice.”
“Give her a kiss on the forehead like you mean it.”
These cues spark laughter, affection, and all the little expressions that make your photos feel personal.

I Read the Room and Match Your Energy
Every couple has their own unique vibe. Some are playful and energetic, while others are more quiet and tender. I always take my cues from you.
If you’re feeling a bit nervous, we’ll ease into things slowly. If you’re ready to be silly and playful, we’ll dive into those prompts right away. Either way, the session becomes a reflection of your real dynamic—not just a curated Pinterest moment!
I Remind You to Just Be Together
At some point, I’ll remind you to pause, take a breath, and just be together.
So I’ll gently remind you:
“Hold each other and forget I’m here.”
“Take a second and just soak each other in.”
“This is your moment.”
That’s when the real magic happens!

I Keep Things Fun and Encouraging
Throughout the session, you’ll hear plenty of encouragement from me. I love hyping up my couples and creating a pressure-free atmosphere.
Expect things like:
“YESSS, that’s the shot.”
“You two are adorable.”
“Don’t move a muscle—this is perfect.”
The more fun we’re having, the more genuine your expressions become. My hope is that you walk away saying, “That was way more fun than I expected!”
Bloom Photography | California Wedding and Couples Photographer
The truth is, you don’t need to know how to pose. You just have to show up and be yourselves. I’ll guide you through everything else with ease, humor, and a whole lot of heart.
If you’re dreaming of engagement session posing that is relaxed and candid, I’d love to help! Whether we’re adventuring outside or creating something cozy indoors like we did with N & M at Create and Bloom Studios, I’m here to make the experience feel like a fun date, not a photo shoot.
